Theater Magdeburg is the four-sector theater of the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt with its own ensembles for musical theater, ballet, concert and drama. It was created in 2004 from the merger of the Theater der Landeshauptstadt and the Freie Kammerspiele. Important historical milestones were the founding of the Magdeburg National Theatre with its own acting ensemble in 1796, Richard Wagner's engagement as conductor from 1834 to 1836, the construction of a new representative municipal theater opposite the railroad station in 1876 and the reorganization of the theater system in its current venues after 1945.

Today, the opera house on Universitätsplatz, built in 1907 as a revue and operetta theater and reopened in 1997 after a fire, is home to music theater, ballet and concerts. A powerful opera ensemble, the popular Ballett Theater Magdeburg company and the nationally renowned Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra present a wide variety of events: from grand opera and contemporary projects to symphony concerts, from operettas to musicals, from literary ballets to interdisciplinary theater evenings. In addition, there are regular insights and post-show discussions, special events such as operetta and ballet galas and performances by prominent guest artists.

In summer, the Magdeburg Theatre has been staging the DomplatzOpenAir in the city center since 2008, with major open-air musical productions across all genres that are broadcast throughout Germany.

The Magdeburg Theatre's drama department is based in the Schauspielhaus, originally a neoclassical villa in Otto-von-Guericke-Straße on Friedensplatz, which was modernized in 2005. Works from all periods and genres can be seen. As a modern repertory theater, Schauspiel Magdeburg is particularly dedicated to contemporary domestic and foreign drama. The repertoire combines different directorial styles and concepts. Matinees, play introductions and audience discussions invite further exchange about the artistic works. Other formats outside of the repertoire in the "Sidekicks" series - discussion events on various occasions, scenic-musical readings, parties and other special events - also offer space for encounters.

Guest performances regularly take the ensembles of Magdeburg Theatre to other European and non-European countries and to renowned festivals.

With its Artistic Mediation department, Theater Magdeburg offers the people of the city the opportunity to experience art and theater in a different way.
