Welthaus Bielefeld was founded in 1980 as the Third World House from a residential community made up of members of the Africa Action Committee (Akafrik) and a number of groups that had been involved in development policy since the 1970s. These included Women for South Africa, the Solidarity Church Working Group, the Catholic University Community and the Latin America Working Group.
Today, over 120 people are actively involved in 12 house groups. Nineteen full-time employees work in the areas of education, culture, projects abroad, voluntary service, public relations and lobbying, fundraising and administration.
As a regional center with a nationwide reach, Welthaus Bielefeld is a permanent fixture in the development policy landscape in Germany. With its two striking buildings (old and new), it is a symbol of the creative power of the third sector.
