xpon-art gallery

xpon-art is a non-commercial project space over three floors in Hamburg's Münzburg dating from 1886. The work concentrates on thematic group exhibitions of contemporary art. One focus is on installations, performative works and works that explore the boundaries of their genre.

In the historic rooms, which are anything but a white cube, the selected works are positioned in relation to each other in order to enter into a dialog with each other and with the visitors. The open and timely calls for proposals on the themes, which have been formed from word combinations or double meanings since the gallery's inception, offer artists scope and create a field of tension for exhibitions that can relate to current issues in society.

The intention of the gallery, which was founded 18 years ago, is to form a position between state museums and commercial galleries on the one hand and rather unsteady platforms for emerging art on the other. The focus is on promoting artists who are not yet established and creating a platform for communication between art and the public. In order to make this possible in the long term, the thematic group exhibitions run for over a month, during which the gallery has regularly opened its doors four days a week for over 18 years.
