Günther Uecker was one of the most active, successful and beloved figures of the German post-war art scene. His name is inextricably linked with the legendary Zero group and his iconic nail reliefs are highly regarded worldwide. Most recently, in January 2025, Uecker’s four ten-meter-high stained glass windows Lichtbogen were installed at Schwerin Cathedral in his native region of Mecklenburg. Uecker’s multifaceted body of work also includes stage and set designs for opera and theatre.
We are presenting a comprehensive exhibition of Uecker’s set design sketches and costume figurines for Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin, created for the Bayreuth Festival between 1979 and 1982. Selected stage sculptures and figurines from this production will also be on display, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience Uecker’s artistic vision for Lohengrin in three dimensions.
In cooperation with the Bayerische Staatsoper – which is staging Lohengrin during this year’s Opera Festival – we will offer a guided tour of the exhibition on July 27 at 3:30 pm.
