Chapter 1: Shelter in the Sahara
‘When the stars went quiet,
The world spoke through its kind,
In a deserted land,
We found generosity unbound.
I am because we are
And after, there was not a thing to be asked’
Having travelled the Sahara in search of a home we grew thirsty, hungry, and tired upon those infinite dunes. The stars went silent and a horizon promised no rewards.
Then one day generosity crossed our path.
A stranger stretched a hand and we followed.
No choice to make, as they showed the way.
We reached a town.
We were offered water before we spoke.
They offered food before our insides growled.
They offered clothes before we grew cold.
Days of unbounded generosity, before we asked
“Why do you do this?”
‘I am because we are’ - they said
Individuality through society
Harmony sustained by connection
Shelter created by community
Their quiet generosity,
A reminder of our new home.
Inspired by their love,
We offered back a show
Something of our own
