Book
In the 24th meeting of the Cologne book club, we will be discussing The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka.
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a darkly humorous, surreal, and thought-provoking novel set in Sri Lanka during its brutal civil war. The story follows Maali Almeida, a war photographer and gambler, who wakes up in the afterlife with no memory of how he died.
Given seven moons to uncover the truth about his murder and guide his loved ones to a hidden cache of incriminating photographs, Maali embarks on a journey through a chaotic and haunting version of the afterlife.
Shehan Karunatilaka masterfully blends satire, mystery, and political commentary, crafting a narrative that is both gripping and deeply reflective. The novel explores themes of truth, justice, love, and the cost of war, all wrapped in a unique blend of magical realism and biting wit.
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a bold and unforgettable read that challenges conventional storytelling and offers a fresh perspective on history, memory, and the ghosts—both literal and figurative—that haunt us.
