Queer Berlin-based Greek photographer Spyros Rennt is launching Intertwined, his new book of photography.
Rennt is one of Berlin's best-known photographers. In 2018, his first self-published book ‘Another Excess’ attracted international attention with its intimate and voyeuristic depiction of the Berlin queer nightlife. Since then his work has evolved into a broader observation of relationships, desire and community—of course mainly within the LGBTQ+ one, to which he belongs.
With Intertwined, Rennt shifts his focus from queer nightlife to more intimate moments of connection, presenting a series of diptychs that explore closeness, intimacy, and vulnerability. His subjects seem to bare - some metaphorically, some quite literally - to his lens, showing themselves with an almost childlike innocence and candour.
At a moment in history when the advance of the - often radical - right wing throughout the West and beyond threatens the very existence of queer individuals - often falsely demonising them as a ‘danger’ - and their hard-won rights, Rennt chooses to focus on the intimacy, tenderness and love that we all share as human beings, regardless of gender and sexuality. His message is just that: we are all united by the feelings and the need for intimacy and love. This makes us all, indeed, intertwined.
