Delving into the dark complexities of sisterhood, adolescence and femininity, SEPTEMBER & JULY (engl. SEPTEMBER SAYS) is the haunting feature filmmaking debut from Ariane Labed.
Teenage sisters September and July share an intensely close but unsettling bond, speaking their own secret language and keeping the outside world at a distance. When a mysterious incident at school results in September’s suspension, their mother Sheela, deeply concerned about the sisters’ troubling behaviour, takes them to an isolated house on the windswept Irish coast. However, the secluded setting only amplifies the family’s tensions as July begins to challenge September’s increasingly sadistic commands.
Based on the acclaimed novel ‘Sisters’ by Daisy Johnson, this uniquely eerie portrait of girlhood features remarkable debut performances from leads Pascale Kann and Mia Tharia, and marks the arrival of a bold and distinct new cinematic voice in Labed.
On February 6th, an exclusive preview of the film will take place at Filmkunst66 in Berlin, followed by a Q&A with the director, Ariane Labed and journalist & presenter, Maria Popov.
In cinemas from March 6th. A MUBI Release.
