From Grammy winner and P-Funk legend Bootsy Collins to rising Atlantan rap superstar JID to James Blake and Jungle collaborator Erick The Architect…. How does a relatively obscure Swiss group, led by sisters Jasmina and Nabyla Serag, manage to collaborate with such A-listers? It’s all about authenticity and quality.
The Swiss band, led by sisters Jasmina and Nabyla Serag, debuted anonymously with a major-label dance hit in 2014 and reinvented itself as an indie pop group in 2018 with the out-of-the-blue support of BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Tom Ravenscroft, who discovered their Reggae infused comeback single „We’ll Be Fine“ and sent it across the airwaves, sparking further plays from the BBC 6 team.
Since then, Sirens Of Lesbos have released two albums and gained additional high-profile supporters, including US producer Christo (J. Cole, JID, 21 Savage, Earthgang), who has already contributed to several of the group’s tracks. Following a successful concert season across Germany, England, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland from October 2023 through September 2024, the band is set to release their third album in spring 2025.
This new project highlights the collective’s expansive musical range, drawing inspiration from artists like Childish Gambino, Trick Daddy, Gangsta Boo, Dungeon Family, and Goodie Mob, while blending influences from 90s British girl pop (e.g., Sugababes), Afrobeats, electronic music, and lo-fi indie pop acts like Mk.gee.
Over the years, Sirens Of Lesbos has evolved through various iterations, achieving milestones such as performing at renowned venues like London’s Jazz Cafe, Amsterdam’s Paradiso, and Fusion Festival near Berlin. With this release, the group embarks on a new chapter marked by a significant shift in their musical direction, shaped by the experience of their numerous live performances. “We’re now clear on the vibe we want to create at our concerts, and we now produce with this mindset,” they explain.
As Black women living in the diaspora, Jasmina and Nabyla navigate the intersection of their parents’ collectivist North-East African culture and the Western emphasis on individuality. Questions of identity have always been central to their journey. While society often demands clear-cut definitions, the sisters have come to embrace their multifaceted identities: “We have always been many things.”
Both artists are deeply rooted in the technical and philosophical dimensions of sound. Jasmina recently completed her Sound Arts degree, and Nabyla is now finishing hers. Their academic pursuits have included creating abstract sound installations in exhibition spaces. However, their focus for the foreseeable future is on elevating the Sirens Of Lesbos project, writing and producing standout indie pop tracks, performing live, and delivering unforgettable experiences for their audiences.
Sirens Of Lesbos will kick off their first tour with the new repertoire in May, which sees them playing an extensive run of shows across Europe including two shows at The Great Escape Festival, where they were announced as part of the First Fifty.
