„Der Film handelt von Nanook (dem Bären), seiner Familie und einer kleinen Schar von Anhängern, den „Itivimuits“ vom Hopewell Sound im nördlichen Ungava, durch deren Freundlichkeit, Treue und Geduld dieser Film entstanden ist.“ – behauptet im Intro der Filmemacher Robert J. Flaherty. Manche sagen auch, NANOOK OF THE NORTH sei der erste Dokumentarfilm der Filmgeschichte. Beides stimmt nicht so ganz. In der Tat sehen wir im Film viele Jagdszenen und verschiedene Handwerkstechniken der Inuit. Nur dass das meiste nachgestellt wurde. Auch Nanook heißt in der Wirklichkeit anders – Allakariallak. Was aber stimmt ist, dass Robert J. Flaherty die damals schwere und unhandliche Filmtechnik in die Arktis brachte und ein Jahr lang unter den schwierigsten Wetterbedingungen an seinem Film arbeitete.  Und erschuf etwas, was genauso kontrovers wie interessant ist.

Der Film wird von Simon Quinn Quartett musikalisch live begleitet.
 

ENG: “The movie is about Nanook (the bear), his family and a small band of followers, the “Itivimuits” of Hopewell Sound in northern Ungava, through whose kindness, loyalty and patience this movie was made.” – claims filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty in the intro. Some also say that “Nanook of he North” was the first documentary in film history. Neither is quite true.  In fact, in the film we see many hunting scenes and various Inuit handicraft techniques. The only difference is that most of it was re-enacted. Nanook also has a different name: Allakariallak. What is true, however, is that Robert J. Flaherty brought the heavy and unwieldy film equipment of the time to the Arctic and worked on his film for a year under most difficult weather conditions.  The result is as controversial as it is interesting.

Seit 2007 schreibt Simon Quinn seine Soundtracks für ein Quartett, das nun seit mehr als 14 Jahren zusammenspielt. Sie verfügen dementsprechend über langjährige und fundierte Erfahrung in der Komposition und Live-Aufführung von Soundtracks zu Meisterwerken der Stummfilm-Ära.
Bei den Produktionen waren unter anderen Kurt Rosenwinkel, Max De Aloe, Oliver Illi, Tomek Soltys und Viola Hammer zu Gast.

ENG: Since 2007 Simon Quinn has been writing his soundtracks for a quartet that has now been playing together for more than 14 years. The quartet has extensive experience in the composition and live performance of self-written soundtracks to masterpieces of the silent film era.
Kurt Rosenwinkel, Max De Aloe, Oliver Illi, Tomek Soltys and Viola Hammer, among others, have been guests on the productions.
