In 2019, Tunisian-Moroccan director Hind Meddeb embarked on a journey with a group of Sudanese activists, documenting their quest for justice and freedom, as well as their revolution against the long-standing oppressive regime of former Sudanese president and military officer, Omar al-Bashir. Yet, amidst hopes for a different future and a life in dignity following the overthrowing of the dictator, events take a rapid and drastic turn: a military crackdown, a civil war, and brutal waves of violence displace over 10 million people. Meddeb’s account poetically captures the ambitions and dreams of her protagonists in this dire moment, moving beyond narratives of victory and defeat to reveal how their struggle reshapes the director’s sense of being and connection to her North African roots.
