Obwohl sich der Stil von Swallow The Sun über die Zeit veränderte, bleiben vor allem die meist düsteren und melancholischen Melodien und stark variierende Tempi charakteristisch für die Musik. Anfangs spielte Swallow the Sun langsamen Death Doom mit „schleifenden Gitarrenriffs“ und „dunklem Growlgesang“, der sich mit klarem Gesang abwechselt, wobei der Gutturale Gesang dominiert. Vergleichbar sind Morgion, My Dying Bride, das Frühwerk von Katatonia oder Amorphis. Mit dem Album When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light wenden sie sich diesem jedoch ab und bewegten sich stilistisch mehr zum Gothic Metal, beziehungsweise zum Gothic Rock und Post-Rock/Metal. Der Klargesang wurde flächendeckender und präsenter eingesetzt und härtere Passagen mit Screams und Growls bleiben teilweise komplett aus.

One of the cornerstones of Finnish melodic death metal is back in action. Led by multi-instrumentalist Tuomas Saukkonen, Before The Dawn released a new masterpiece of an album "Stormbringers" in June 2023. The band also hit the road for the first time in over 10 years with successful tours in Finland and Europe. Before The Dawn released an EP called "Archaic Flame" in early 2024 and will soon be back in the studio for more melancholic yet crushing metal. Before The Dawn are: Paavo Laapotti (vocals), Juho Räihä (guitars), Pyry Hanski (bass) and Tuomas Saukkonen (drums).
