Documentary, director: Samira El Mouzghibati, Belgium/France, 2024, 96 min, AR/FR/Tarifit, with EN st.
Like a stranger in one's own family: Filmmaker Samira El Mouzghibati shares a close bond with her four sisters. However, the relationship the daughters have with their mother, shaped by anger, helplessness, and disappointment, is distant and cold. Raised in Belgium, El Mouzghibati embarks on a journey to Morocco with her mother, visiting her village of origin in the Rif mountains, in an attempt to improve this connection. Infused with home video footage and old family photos, the result is a film about toxic family dynamics, the struggle with tradition and the fight for a self-determined life, with a complex and complicated mother at its center.
(Y)our Mother is El Mouzghibati’s debut feature, premiering in 2024 at Visions du Réel, where it was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize.
Followed by a film talk with Samira El Mouzghibati.
